As a teacher with the Summer Teaching Program, you will serve on a team of about 8-10 people providing intensive English training to Chinese English teachers.   Each instructor on your team will teach to a class of about sixteen adults and will spend three hours each weekday morning in classroom instruction focusing on listening and speaking.

A team leader assigned to the team will supervise your teaching and provide you and your team members with support and encouragement throughout the program.

Afternoons and evenings are full of other activities including methodology lectures, which are given by the team leader with the assistance of the team, and cultural demonstrations where the team uses skits, stories and other visual methods to provide insights into aspects of North American culture and history.  Your Chinese students reciprocate with similar cultural presentations about their country, using their English skills.

The connections you'll make with Chinese English teachers will provide the foundation needed to help shape the future of this great country.  What you'll share and teach to these leaders will be passed on to their own colleagues and students for years to come.
ELIC’s China Summer Teaching Program will accept applications from adults with a B.A. or B.S. in any field.   A limited number of qualified college students majoring in English or education can also apply, as well as mature adults with two years of college experience.  In addition, applicants must fit the following criteria:

  • Committed Christian
  • Native English speaker
  • In excellent physical health
  • A remarkable summer awaits you.

One of the strengths of ELIC’s China Summer Teaching Program is the structure of the team on which you’ll serve.  And one of the key elements to the success of that team is the team leader.  The team leader is the primary liaison between the team and the school officials, and provides methodology training to the combined student body, as well as providing supervision and direction to the team.   Team leaders are required to have experience leading, encouraging and supporting others, should enjoy working with small groups of people, and be able to make decisions and resolve conflict.  In addition, to qualify as a team leader, you must also fit the following requirements:
  • Committed Christian
  • Age 35 to 65
  • Have English-related teaching experience:
          - Three or more years at university level, or
          - Ten or more years at high school level
  • Hold an English- or education-related master's degree

  • ELIC provides an extra few days of specific training for those serving as leaders, prior to their team's arrival in Southern California for orientation.
