For a Summer
Engage Program (college students)
A group of 16-20 high school and middle schools students eagerly awaits your arrival in Hong Kong SAR. They will start off as your students and end up as your friends!
You will find the teaching of conversational English both challenging and rewarding. The curriculum will provide the general structure for your classes, which meet every weekday morning for three hours. Your afternoons will be filled with an array of activities outside of class: from field trips to sports, skits and presentations. You will be encouraged as you observe the progress in your students’ English speaking abilities through these fun activities. School officials are very proud to have you on their campus and will treat you like an honored guest. You will find your typical schedule altered frequently as the officials surprise you with field trips, banquets and random unplanned events on and off campus
Teaching experience is not a requirement to participate on in this exciting program. What you need most is a heart to serve, and everything else will come naturally.
The capstone to this memorable summer with Engage is the trip you will take from Hong Kong SAR to one of the other countries where ELIC serves – Mainland China, Mongolia, Vietnam, Laos or Cambodia. During this week you will see some amazing sights, experience an additional culture, and in many cases have a chance to meet the longer-term University Teaching Program teachers serving with ELIC, hearing their vision and passion for the people of their country of service. Many Engage participants testify that this was the single-most impactful experience of their lives. ELIC sends qualified teachers from North America, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Australia, Hong Kong and Singapore.
Summer Teaching Program (teachers, professionals, college students)
The Summer Teaching Program is an outstanding opportunity for new and seasoned educators to invest six rewarding weeks in the lives of fellow educators in China, Laos or Mongolia. So rewarding is this experience that more than half of our participants are returning teachers from a previous summer – many of whom have returned multiple times. For many educators, serving in this program is the highlight of their year.
Those whom we teach in this highly valued program are dedicated national teachers of English, usually at the primary, middle or secondary school level. They are required to receive periodic ongoing education credits and since 1985 ELIC has had the privilege of serving in this key role. The focus is in providing opportunities to practice and upgrade both English speaking skills and language teaching methodology.
Because we have seasoned educators on each team of eight to ten, additional team members may have less teaching experience – those with degrees in other fields as well as college students, especially those majoring in English, education, TEFL or TESOL. Our comprehensive training prepares each participant for success both inside and outside of the classroom, ensuring a rewarding and memorable five weeks of service overseas. ELIC sends qualified teachers from North America, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Australia, Hong Kong and Singapore.
