Myanmar

In early 2012 ELIC once again established a teaching presence in The Republic Of The Union of Myanmar. Known for centuries as the Golden Land, the country lies between the Bay of Bengal, the Andaman Sea, Thailand, China, India and Bangladesh. The many rivers and miles of coastland provide abundant irrigation through large areas, while the easternmost end of the Himalayas rise in the north and include the highest mountain in Southeast Asia, rising to 5889m. The people of Myanmar are comprised of a number of people groups, and Buddhism is the predominant religion. The people are amazingly warm and engaging, and the recent surge in tourism is fueling a growing desire to embrace the English language. As a member state of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Myanmar will host all ASEAN meetings in 2014 and the SEA Games in 2013. With the varied languages represented by the member states of ASEAN, English is the official language for ASEAN meetings and dialog.

Presently we have year-round University Teaching Program teachers serving in Yangon at a vocational college focused on the hospitality and tourism industry. We are in need of several additional teachers to join this team. If you are open to exploring this opportunity, please click on the Contact link or Register now.

We also host several month-long Communicative English Intensives each year in the capital, Naypyitaw. This program is open to ELIC alumni and other professional teachers. The students in these intensives may be either government staff or those serving in the hospitality and tourism industry. A typical intensive may include separate classes of both groups. For the students, the classes may be taken from a portion of their workday, or could be conducted ether before or after their normal work hours. The students are eager to learn and highly motivated. In some cases the varying levels of English warrant splitting the classes into separate groups. We typically have 2-4 teachers on these teams. These intensives are offered 3-4 times each year, though not on a regular schedule.
