The University Teaching Program is ELIC’s flagship program and is a commitment of 2 years or more, so that means you get to really invest in your students and community abroad.
Our teachers build friendships and impact lives, and have done so for more than 30 years. Opportunities abound outside the classroom to interact with students, learn their culture, and talk about life. These students often become life-long friends.
If you have a yearning to be part of something bigger than yourself, then this is your opportunity!
ELIC is committed to providing the best professional training possible. Each UTP teacher receives both cross-cultural and classroom training from Wheaton College including a graduate-level TESOL certificate. ELIC also provides teaching resources online and on every campus in order to help our teachers thrive and be successful. ELIC seeks to match your unique gifts by offering a variety of teaching opportunities.
ELIC values diverse and thriving teams. Living and working alongside a community of singles, couples, and families from a variety of backgrounds is an integral part of the University Teaching Program. Team members provide emotional/spiritual support and encouragement, and meet regularly for academic planning and collaboration.
ELIC provides multiple outlets for professional development. Through a partnership with Wheaton College you have the opportunity to earn a tuition-reduced MA in TESOL & Intercultural Studies.
Do I need to have teaching experience?
No. Many people come to ELIC without previous teaching experience. You will be provided with the cultural & professional training necessary to be a successful teacher. This training includes a graduate-level TESOL certificate from Wheaton College, and the interpersonal framework needed to thrive in your new home. Once overseas, you will have access to ELIC’s Teaching Specialists, who offer coaching & guidance to teachers throughout the year.
Do I need to speak the language?
No, you do not need to speak the language of your host country. Most of the students ELIC teaches are able to speak at least some basic English. However, many teachers find that their experience is more rewarding and fruitful when they are able to gain an understanding of the host language. For this reason, ELIC supports language study and provides a variety of options to make this possible.
Is this a paid position?
Our priority is for you to thrive as you live and work overseas. This is achieved with a combination of income from your school and financial support you will fundraise. We will work with you to build a customized financial profile tailored to your specific situation and needs. ELIC also provides professional support raising training and coaching to help you raise funds before you leave.
What about my student loans?
We understand that student loans are a reality for most people today. However, we don’t want this to keep you from following your vision to teach overseas! Therefore, ELIC offers several options to those who have students loans and works with you to decide which option is the best. Many of ELIC’s teachers have successfully taught overseas while paying off their student loans at the same time. Talk with a candidate advisor to learn more about these options.
What if I have a family?
Families are a vital part of our organization! Currently, ELIC has more than 60 families teaching and serving with us overseas, including more than 140 children! Each member of a family plays a unique role interacting with students and members of the community. ELIC offers families specific resources and training especially designed for them.
For those looking to further their education, post-graduate certificates are available in either Teacher Mentoring or Curriculum Development from Wheaton College, as well as PhD options from Biola University. ELIC also offers language learning opportunities in each of the countries we serve.
