Iraq has come through so much in its recent history, and its resilient people are learning to adapt to the changes. A country director there describes the Iraqi people as “deeply loyal, humorous, fun-loving, friendly, and generous. They are honest, open, dramatic, and love and honor fiercely.”

Teachers are highly regarded in this culture. In fact, Iraq stands out for its commitment to education with a literacy rate of around eighty percent. We have been honored to witness the hospitality and sincerity of this culture since our first teachers came here in 2019. Most of our teachers work at a language institute teaching young adults or at universities.

What are the teaching and team time structures like?

What are the teaching and team time structures like?

Teachers will have about six-to-eight hours of teaching time each week and will spend additional time on class preparation, which varies from teacher to teacher.

Formal team meetings are held about twice a week. Sometimes these are focused on team building and bonding while other meetings involve planning projects or discussing academics or culture and language.

With teammates in all different phases of life and career, professional development is not one-size-fits-all, so professional development is highly individualized. Each team member meets with a teaching specialist to develop their own plan. Monthly team meetings are also dedicated to professional development topics.

Personal development is built through the strength of the team structure. Intentional encouragement from teammates creates a welcoming environment for teachers to thrive and grow.

What is housing like?

What is housing like?

Teammates live close together if not in the same apartment complex. This way they can share rides and shop in similar areas, becoming well-known in the local community as a group. Apartments are inexpensive, spacious, and easy to find.

What is it like to raise a family in Iraq?

The many foreign families already living in Iraq have become an excellent resource for new families. Most homeschool, but some locations have international and International Baccalaureate (IB) school options.

If only one spouse is teaching, the other will find no shortage of opportunities. Hospitality is valued in this culture, and many members of the community may want to practice their English. We encourage everyone to play a significant role on the team, which could include helping as a business manager or with special projects.
